Hi,
I am the ELP coordinator at Meadows. Each fall we have a group of kids that compete in the Regional Mock Trial competition in Des Moines. Last year we moved on to the state competition where one of our middle school groups won 8th place in the state of Iowa! The coach is a lawyer, so the students get a lot of first hand knowledge about the law.
Mock Trial is a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun. It is open to any student in grades 6, 7, or 8. Students learn both sides of an actual court case. At the competition they compete with other schools by being the prosecuting team and then the defendent's team. There is a lot of memorization, and the students will learn a lot about the legal system. The students will also learn that they can stretch their abilities farther than they thought possible.
This summer there will be a Mock Trial Camp taught by attorneys. I have attached the forms if you are interested in having your student attend. Attending the camp is not mandatory. Sign up for next year's Mock Trial team will take place at the beginning of the school year next fall.
I hope to see you participate in next year's Mock Trial Team!
